April 20th | 2pm-2am

Medusa is joining Culture Jam to create a deeply immersive event across the whole castle grounds. Assemble your clan, gather your costumes and journey into a world of adventure, characters, dancing, feasts, arena games and immersion.

A failed ritual has led to a collapsing of the veil between this world and the underworld. Four creatures from the abyss inhabit the castle, each with their own secret lair and agenda.  Seek out the dark. Master the rituals. Save the castle.

Medusa is proud to join an incredible collaboration of artists, engineers, game designers and performers to bring you a festival that transcends reality. Get lost in immersive spaces, dance with friends, dabble in magic, and play.

FAQs

  • It would feel like that if you chose to just come and observe, the difference is that there’s no script and no one knows where the night will go! Every attendee is just as much a main character as the next, and you are free to not only explore a living breathing world, but shape it.

Whereas in Immersive Theatre you would be a mostly passive observer, in a Live-Action Role-Playing game (LARP) you and the other players are the world. In other words, you have just as much power to shape the story and outcome as anyone else.

  • 1. You must obey the Power Cards.

This means playing fairly - if someone touches you with a Power Card you must read it and follow it’s instructions; this might mean you are knocked out, or turned into a frog! Running from someone who has touched you with a card and not reading it is against the rules.

    2. No physical touching or verbal abuse is allowed without consent.

We want to let you be as dramatic and intense as you like, but its much more important that everyone feels safe and respected. You can use the ‘Half-Moose’ gesture to check with other players before attempting something more adventurous.

    3. You must use your character’s name once play begins and remain in character until the end.

This is essential. Breaking the immersion of other people is disrespectful and will cause you to be thrown out.

    4. You may only drop character if you are in the "Out of Play" area or using the “Half Moose Gesture”

If you want a break from being in character please use the out of character area, which will be indicated at the start of the event. The ‘Half Moose Gesture’ is done by placing an open hand above your head, and it indicates you are speaking out of character for a moment, either to check consent or - usually - to make a joke you can only make out of character.

    5. If you hear “Code Red” at any time, freeze and pause play. Someone may need help.

    6. Imagine the other players as they wish to be imagined.

Focus on making others feel comfortable, and they will do the same for you. Being good to play with relies on fairness, inclusion, and safety.

    7. Always commit to the bit! True winning is being so fun to play with, not being the best.

We’d like to invite you to embrace play in its fullest extend, there is no limit to how weird you can go!

  • Nope! The game mechanics are explained in the first 5 minutes, and role playing is way way way more natural than you think. We all start with the ability to play pretend and slowly lost touch with it in the “real world” as adults, all we do at Medusa is create the space where its safe to get back in touch with that state of play.

If you’ve never been in touch with it but always wanted to, you should definitely come. When you’re surrounded by adults lost in play it’s easy to get sucked into the fantasy, and the most important thing isn’t to be a great performer, it’s just to “yes, and” the people around you - or said another way: just go along with it!

  • We don’t provide your role - you do! Take a look at the available factions on the page for the game you want to play and consider what you’d like to be. Maybe you’re a dirty cop working for the Mafia, maybe you’re a Politician in the pocket of the Akuma, maybe you’re a Thug working for the Hell Riders!

When you buy your ticket you’ll receive a link to our character sheet creator which has prompts and instructions - be sure to submit it a week before the event if you want us to include you in the world building.

  • Some people become their most conniving self, others their most flamboyant, and others again their most dramatic. The world comes alive with intrigue, schemes, alliances, betrayals, games, thievery, and banter - and by the end of the night we’ve left reality behind completely.

  • Be fun to play with. That’s it. The “winner” isn’t the person or team with the most points, money, territory, whatever - it’s the person who had the most fun.

Focus on being a joy to play with, help other people feel confident and comfortable and safe, let us handle the rest.

Lastly, there are various game mechanics at each event, these will be released in emails and posts in the lead up to the event but you can just ask your faction leaders about it during the game.

  • All you need is a costume and a name for your character. When you go to get your ticket you will have to choose a faction, which will determine who your kin are for the event. When you arrive you will be asked to pick a class which will determine what abilities you have.

All the information you need to decide will be on the page for that event.

If you’re someone who likes a little more depth in their roleplaying you can also complete a character sheet before the event and write a backstory - this will enable us to write you into the world before the event, which could mean that other characters know you already, or perhaps something is waiting for you in the game world somewhere…

Curious?

Medusa is a growing community of people who value play.

All attendees make their own characters and are free to explore the world as they please, using a game system that takes less than a minute to learn. The events that follow are unscripted, and have limitless potential.

In short, Medusa hosts immersive role-playing events for people curious about stepping out of reality, and for those who stepped out a long time ago.
